How to Wash Jeans, Wool, and Delicate Fabrics: Best Tips to Keep Clothes Looking New
- Andrej Ivanovski
Jeans, wool, and delicate fabrics such as silk or lace require special care when washing. If you treat them like regular T-shirts or towels, they’ll quickly lose color, shape, or even tear. To make your clothes last longer and look like new, it’s important to follow a few simple but essential rules.
1. How to Wash Jeans the Right Way
High-quality denim should be washed as rarely as possible—frequent washing leads to fading and fabric wear. Still, if you wear jeans in hot weather and sweat more, it’s best to freshen them up with a wash. Always turn dark jeans inside out before putting them in the machine to help preserve the color and prevent fading. And don’t forget to zip them up—this protects both the jeans and the rest of the laundry in the drum.
2. Washing and Drying Wool
Wool is a natural, high-quality, but very delicate material. Always wash it on a delicate or hand-wash cycle, and only in cold water. Never hang it directly on a heater, dryer, or in direct sunlight. Wool garments are best dried flat, placed on a towel, so they keep their shape and elasticity.
3. Protecting Delicate Laundry
Nylon stockings, silk, satin, lace, swimsuits, or bras are easily damaged in the washing machine. To protect them, always use mesh laundry bags for washing and drying. These keep fabrics from wearing out or tearing, and are also useful for small items like gloves, scarves, or sneakers.
4. Color Catchers: Help and Hazard
Color catchers can be very effective in preventing dye transfer from dark to light clothes. They help whites stay white and colors remain vibrant. However, they can also damage your washing machine if they get stuck in the pump or filter. To avoid this, always place them inside a mesh bag—they’ll work just as well while keeping your machine safe.
